A Glimpse into Our History
As we know the land that would become Swiss Township has been inhabited by many native peoples since the melting of the last Glacier, the latest of them being the Ojibwa, They had a large village at the confluence of the Yellow and Croix and of coerce are still there today. A "who's who" of traders, explorers and missionaries visited along the river over the coerce of a few hundred years. The area was then logged in a short period of time 1870s-1890s and by 1898 the land of cutover stumps and sand was opened to settlers to farm under the Homestead Act. Most settlers came to the area from Spooner or Grantsburg using wagon roads. Before the Township was Swiss it was first Marshland, then Meenon, then Blaine and then Swiss in 1909. Before Danbury there were four settlements in the township, Fairview, White City, Pansy and the largest Kreinerville. The name Swiss comes from the Swiss cows of the Chipman's. There is no one ethnic group that really stood out it was a mix of peoples that came for free/cheep land. Most left. The best farm land is to the north/west part of the township. In 1911 the $OO Like came thru and Danbury was built and took over commerce, the other settlements soon folded. Hwy. 35 was built in 1921 hwy.77 a bit later.-

Our Community
With a population of just over 800 people, Swiss is a close-knit town where neighbors know each other and community means everything. We’re home to hardworking families, retirees, seasonal cabin owners, and outdoor enthusiasts who value the area’s tranquility and strong local values.
Local businesses, small farms, and craftsmen make up the backbone of our economy, and many residents give back by volunteering, attending town meetings, or helping with community events.
